I can tell you're not from Texas said the birder next to me when we stopped along the Llano River to watch the bald eagles at their nest. We don't say it with a "y" in Texas!
O--sorry --I thought double "l's" were pronounced as a y in Spanish. I was so proud of that since I haven't remembered much of my Spanish since my years in college.
The photos show how dark and drizzly it was that day. The eagle was lagniappe. I had followed its progress on the internet mail lists, but was surprised to accidentally come upon it as we browsed down back roads.
We drove across one of the "slab" roads that cross the rock bottomed river and then on to the town itself, an iconic little Texas town with a courthouse at the center.

I've always called it Yano, but I think most texans call it Lano, based on my experienced. A service station operator told me one time it was pronounced Lano, that Yano was the Mexican pronunciation.
ReplyDeletethat probably explains it--locals always have different pronunciations --it was just in the spirit that it was given--
ReplyDeletethere are many unique pronunciations in Texas :)
