sandhill cranes

taken with my iPhone

While driving down an east Texas road, we spotted these large grey birds feeding in a field. My husband and I looked at each other and shouted, "What the heck were those?". We backed up and I was able to get a shot or two of these sandhill cranes with my iphone and lumix.

Last fall we missed seeing them at Bosque del Apache in New Mexico, where they winter. But we did see several flocks in flight then.

We were amazed at their size and so happy that they stayed long enough for us to get good looks.

This shot is from the iphone, and I guess the camera focused on the fence posts, but I am happy to have the photos!

That's a sturdy looking fence, too. A pleasant, pleasing view. Makes one wonder what kind of trees those are and those darkish bushes?

  2. Thanks, Bill, we saw these cranes on a trip to Texas--big screeching stop and back up on the road--and the nearest camera was my iphone.
I did finally get a few shots with my panasonic, but haven't downloaded them yet. I was so excited to see them!

Muleshe National Wildlife Refuge south of Muleshoe, TX thousands of Sandhill Cranes feed and many summer there. On days when I was working that remote area I'd stop and watch those beautiful birds, hundreds of them.
